Abstract
|
|
|
This study integrated various concepts and measures of health presented in literature with particular attention to physical health and to the aged population in order to facilitate adequate use of variables of health in health services research.
Health
was viewed to occupy the health space shaped by the conceptual and operational axes. The major dimensions along the conceptual axis were recognized as the physical, mental, social, and integrative health. As to the major dimensions along the
operational
axis, the medical, functional, and self-evaluative dimensions were identified. Concepts of the medical dimension of physical health were health potential, symptoms, diseases, disabilities, etc. Such concepts as physical fitness, limitations in
various
activities tap the functional dimension of physical health. The self-evaluative dimension embraced self-ratings of and satisfaction with physical health and physical well-being. Measures of these concepts were further discussed.
